The Ethernet hub is also known to others as the network hub or the repeater hub. As a device used to connect many different twisted pair or fiber optic Ethernet devices and making them function as a solitary network segment, it has a variety of uses in the world of information technology.

The Ethernet hub is a quite simple device that is mainly used for broadcasting. Hubs in general do not change or do anything to any of the traffic that comes through their systems. What this means is that any packet that enters any of the ports will be broadcast out in all the other available ports. Packet collision, which is when packets meet up at any port, somehow slows down the process and greatly decreases the velocity of the packet traffic.

There are a good number of hubs that can also detect some of the most common problems including excessive collisions of packets in any single port. Hubs have specific measures that they take in order to remedy problems, such as disconnecting from the shared medium after partitioning the port. This makes Ethernet hubs a lot stronger and faster than the old coaxial cable Ethernet technology.
