Hubs and routers play several crucial roles in the lives of businesses and networks. Performing seemingly simple tasks that aid in the transferring of data from one computer to another, these inventions have been quite vital to the growth of information technology over the years.

The router functions simply as its role indicates, and are often used to connect at least two networks together. Using routers to connect multiple networks within an office environment is actually quite normal these days. An example of this is when a router is used in order to connect many different computers over a wireless network that includes a local area network, or LAN. The router also makes it possible for such LAN networks to be able to connect to the Internet, generally referred to as a wide area network.

The hub is a simple device that functions and operates on what is known as the first layer of the OSI standard. This layer is known as the physical layer. The hub is actually a simpler module when compared to a router, and does not always guard its content well as it manages messages as bits. What it does is simply record signals and rebroadcast them to all available ports.
